A Bloopie!

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Haven’t had this in a long while. :D

After dropping off a friend… right after Sunday service, along Tagaytay Road:

ds: Dad, I’m hungry, can we have lunch at that Japanese restaurant Ippon Yari?
dd: Me too, I’m hungry! Hey how about PruLife UK? There it is… close to Ippon Yari…
Me: Are you sure PruLife’s a restaurant? What kind of food do you think they serve?
dd: Chinese!
ds: aw, Aemu that’s not a Chinese restaurant! Can’t you see??? It says UK, it’s British!

uh, duh…

Cartoons

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Ok, let’s try something light this time. Things have been too serious around here so it’s time to have a little fun. I found these cartoons while I was browsing for a life insurance rate quote and thought I’d share it. It’s by Ira Coffin (even the name sounds funny).

If you want to see more of these cartoons, check out Ira Coffin’s blogs here and here

A few of my favorite things…Chocnut atbp.

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Remember this?

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into Springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad.

(from the Musical – The Sound of Music)

I have a few of my favorite things that make me feel happy on the inside and no, it doesn’t include the latest tech gadgets today. I was thinking more of the “rustic, make you feel warm and cozy” type of stuff much like patintero, kite flying and playing on swing sets make you feel.

So what are some of my favorite “comfort” things:

  1. Chocnut – who needs See’s or Godiva when you’ve got chocnut! The fat one of course.
  2. Lugaw Tokwa – I miss the authentic probinsya lugaw-tokwa with lots of browned garlic on top.
  3. Rain – not the typhoon kind or the ones that cause flash floods but I remember growing up listening to the raindrops pitter-pattering on our roof. Music to my ears.
  4. Fresh bedsheets - especially when they’re cool because of the rain in #3. :)
  5. Fishballs in UP – I’m not a UP grad but I remember going to UP with my roomate and just pigging out on fishballs and sago. I loooove it when my little fishball swells up with vinegar and the sweet and sour sauce. yum!
  6. Chinese garter, tumbang preso, patintero, sipa and piko – nope. no Counterstrike for me.
  7. Ice drop with munggo, keso, beans or buko – they used to make it with those metal molds.
  8. Chikam – a word coined by my little girl. It’s actually, pork adobo fat cut up into little pieces and fried till crunchy before adding rice from the night before – something I learned from my dad. Singangag to the max.
  9. DZFE FM – there’s something soothing about classical music. I love listening to the classics especially on a rainy day.
  10. My dad’s keys with his dogtags – I miss hearing the sound of the clicking of those keys with his dogtags. Once I hear those keys, I immediately know my dad’s finally home. I miss you, daddy!

So these are some of my favorite things. How about you? Care to share what your favorite things are? Just leave a comment if you do.

You Are Ballet

You are quite introverted. You enjoy keeping to yourself and cultivating your talents.

You are dedicated and focused. If practice makes perfect, you’re willing to keep practicing.

While some people may dismiss you as boring, you can be quite edgy and interesting.

You can fit in almost anywhere… and your style ranges from conservative to funky.

What Dance Are You?
Well, waddayaknow… hahahaha :)

Battle of the Texters – American Idol S8 Finale

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

It’s finally done! The songs have been sung, the judges have said their pieces, and now,  it’s up to the texters to decide who they want as the next American Idol. Come to think of it, in the end, it’s really not about the Idol contestants. The bottom line is it’s all about the TEXTER! Who cares if Kris or Glambert sang the song well or either one of them displayed great artistry. People will vote for the ones they like and they will text like crazy to make their voices heard even if they overload the phone company’s cell tower just to get their votes through. So much power literally in one’s hand, eh? We’re all at the edge of our seats wondering who’s it gonna be. Who won the The Battle of the Texters? Well, in a few hours or so we’ll find out soon enough. As for me, well my vote doesn’t count – I’m out of coverage area. hahaha I wonder what would happen if they allowed internet voting and the whole world could vote online… hmmm interesting, don’t you think? LOL

Idol watching…..

Kids say the darndest things…really.

How’s about some bloopies to cheer you up today? Here are a couple that made the hubby and I smile.

Scene 1:

One afternoon after Sunday worship, we passed thru a grassy area while we were going to our parked car. I found some makahiya or “shy grass”  (that closes its leaves when it’s touched) growing between the crab grass. So I called the kids to take a look at it. Actually, I also enjoy watching those little leaves fold up and I thought it would be fun for them to see that. They were so amazed! So they went scouting for more “shy grass or shy flowers” as they called it and I left them to explore. When it was time to leave, they were so excited to tell me what had happened. They said;

Kai :  Mama, that was so much fun!

Aemu:  Yeah, they’re so beautiful (she said so sweetly).

Kai:    Oh, but one of them didn’t close up its leaves.

Mama:   (finally I had the chance to say something lol) Why do you think it didn’t close its leaves?

Aemu:   Well, probably it’s not shy.

LOL

Scene 2:

One Sunday after church again, we came out of the building and the gloomy rain clouds had gone and the sun came out and it was just so beautiful we took our time passing thru the small park to where our car was.

Here’s what happened:

Mama:    Wow, that’s a nice sky right there.

Daddy:   Okay, hold on. I’m going to take a picture.

Aemu:   Yeah, isn’t it beautiful. What a great day for parking!

The hubby and I looked at each other to see if we heard right. It was only later that we realized that what she meant was walking thru the park not parking the car. ROFL!

Okay, folks. That’s it for now coz I need to be moving boxes to make room for some scrapbook goodies I’m picking up tomorrow. Yup, I’m gonna try and see if  I can get back into the paper scrapping groove – I can’t wait to try them out. Later y’all!

Off to CCP

5 Budgeting Secrets

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Coffee break with Jan – ver. 16
It’s Money talk Monday and Jan’s coffee break topic is quite timely. Her question is:
                                            What is your budgeting secret?

An accounting background is not a pre-requisite before you can make a budget. Logic, common sense, a clear understanding of priorities and an action plan to execute these priorities are actually the major elements that make a good budget work. Why? Because expenses are Choices. What we do with the choices that are presented to us is our Decision. And these decisions are based on Priorities relative to our own values and lifestyles. You are in fact, a CEO of your own company, which is your household, and you are responsible for making decisions, good or bad that make or break your money bank.

We have been in a budget-overhaul mode these past few weeks because of the recent events in our country that affects us all… the rice ‘shortage’, the ever increasing fuel costs which creates a domino effect on all other consumer goods that are part of our grocery lists, etc. etc.. It hasn’t been easy. If we continued to go on with our previous spending patterns, we would never get out of the “red“. Borrowing the word “doodads” from Robert Kiyosaki – our “doodads” have to go!

Here are some of the not so secret things I do as far as budgeting goes:

  1. Be in the know where your cash flows. Is your spending (cash going out) faster than the rate you generate income (cash coming in)? The devil is really in the details. You might not realize it but that the gourmet caffe latte you had this morning on your way to work could already be equivalent to your daily minimum wage and now you’ve already spent it even before the day’s work is done. Keep a tab on those little details.
  2. Best place to eat is at home. We try to eat at home before we leave the house so that we don’t have to spend that much on food when we go out. Then we can splurge a little bit more on desserts etc.
  3. BYOB. Bring your own baon (packed food) in short. I have two kids and I can’t stop them from being hungry or thirsty while we are on the road so that need is already factored in and is part of my grocery list. Instead of the drive thru, they have their little foodie bag packed with goodies they can munch on thru a traffic jam.
  4. Barbecue it! That’s how I describe it when we have to do chores or errands in a certain location. Tuhugin na ng sabay-sabay. We make sure we do all we can do when we are in a certain place. By doing that we make sure our gas gets its full mileage benefit.
  5. Be a giver. I know that this may sound out of place but this little truth nugget has seen me through over and over again. The more we have given, the more we get back in return. It’s actually the best kept secret that anyone should ever know. What you sow, you will reap and often the reaping happens when you need it most.

So those are my 5 tips on how I budget. I made a little cartoon based on a true story my hubby told me. This really happened to him while he was growing up. Enjoy!

The queen is dead, long live the queen!

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

My eight year-old son (he’s homeschooled and in grade 2) asked me a question while he was having breakfast this morning. Quite honestly, I don’t know the answer and I don’t want to scour Wiki for it so if you have the answer, just let me know.  Maybe I’ll come up with a badge that says – Congratulations, you are smarter than a 2nd grader! lol ;)

Do you know the answer to this?

When the queen of an ant colony dies, does the colony go to the colony next door and join them?

 Think… think… (esep-esep)
