Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson dead

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Two icons in the entertainment industry have died. Farrah Fawcett, 62, succumbed to anal cancer and died Thursday morning at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. Michael Jackson, 50, died at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and was believed to have suffered cardiac arrest.  I remember growing up and watching Charlie’s Angels together with my dad and how Farrah’s hairstyle was a must have during that time. I also remember watching the Grammy’s with my dad and I remember a very young Michael Jackson singing ‘ I’ll Be There’ together with the Jackson 5. No MTV back then… just plain good ole music. I probably feel the loss as well because they were part of my growing years.

What is anal cancer anyway? According to Wikipedia : Anal cancer is a type of cancer which arises from the anus, the distal orifice of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a distinct entity from the more common colorectal cancer.

Symptoms of anal cancer include bloating and change in bowel habits, sporadic bright red rectal bleeding accompanied with uncontrollable itching at the opening of the anus, and low energy and fatigue. Women may experience lower back pain due to pressure the tumor exerts on the vagina, and vaginal dryness.

Anal cancer is most effectively treated with surgery, and in early stage disease (i.e., localised cancer of the anus without metastasis to the inguinal lymph nodes), surgery is often curative.

What is cardiac arrest? According to the American Heart Association : Cardiac arrest is the sudden, abrupt loss of heart function. The victim may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. It’s also called sudden cardiac arrest or unexpected cardiac arrest. Sudden death (also called sudden cardiac death) occurs within minutes after symptoms appear.

The most common underlying reason for patients to die suddenly from cardiac arrest is coronary heart disease. Most cardiac arrests that lead to sudden death occur when the electrical impulses in the diseased heart become rapid (ventricular tachycardia) or chaotic (ventricular fibrillation) or both. This irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) causes the heart to suddenly stop beating. Some cardiac arrests are due to extreme slowing of the heart. This is called bradycardia.

Other factors besides heart disease and heart attack can cause cardiac arrest. They include respiratory arrest, electrocution, drowning, choking and trauma. Cardiac arrest can also occur without any known cause.

Brain death and permanent death start to occur in just 4 to 6 minutes after someone experiences cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest can be reversed if it’s treated within a few minutes with an electric shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat. This process is called defibrillation. A victim’s chances of survival are reduced by 7 to 10 percent with every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation. Few attempts at resuscitation succeed after 10 minutes.

My father suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away in 2007. It is not an easy thing to lose someone you love dearly. I have moved on since then but I cannot say that the pain has left. It is as potent today as it was back then. Nevertheless, we all have one life to live. Live deep. Live deliberately. Live life. Live.

Micro SD

Friday, June 19th, 2009

I’d like to say thanks to Kate Hadfield who dropped by my blog and brought to my attention that my comments section was not working. I recently updated my wordpress version and doing so necessitates one deactivating ALL wordpress plugins and reactivating after the upgrade. I think I made a mistake reactivating one comment plugin that made the site a little wonky. I fixed it up and hopefully all’s well with my site.

On to other things, I was chatting with my niece the other day (actually, graveyard time) and she wanted my opinion regarding a few cell phone models she was looking at. I liked one in particular because of the high memory capacity (it included a micro sd external memory aside from the phone memory) and it also had a usb slot which can be quite helpful when downloading stuff on your phone. I don’t know if she has decided already but hopefully she will find a unit that matchers her needs.

Another thing that I did was update my odesk account and I took a couple of tests as well. Thankfully, I was happy with the results. Check out my little badges below. Pretty neat, huh?  I haven’t gotten any jobs over there yet but hopefully I will in the near future.

Be back for more in a bit!

Battle of the Texters – American Idol S8 Finale

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

It’s finally done! The songs have been sung, the judges have said their pieces, and now,  it’s up to the texters to decide who they want as the next American Idol. Come to think of it, in the end, it’s really not about the Idol contestants. The bottom line is it’s all about the TEXTER! Who cares if Kris or Glambert sang the song well or either one of them displayed great artistry. People will vote for the ones they like and they will text like crazy to make their voices heard even if they overload the phone company’s cell tower just to get their votes through. So much power literally in one’s hand, eh? We’re all at the edge of our seats wondering who’s it gonna be. Who won the The Battle of the Texters? Well, in a few hours or so we’ll find out soon enough. As for me, well my vote doesn’t count – I’m out of coverage area. hahaha I wonder what would happen if they allowed internet voting and the whole world could vote online… hmmm interesting, don’t you think? LOL

the Michael for Berklee Project

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Here’s something that you might want to check out. Filipino Drummer and College of St. Benilde Scholar, Michael Gemina, is on his way to Berklee this summer. He recently got his U.S. Visa approved and is inviting everyone out there to be a fan on his website – michaelgemina.com. He is a part of the band Private Publiko and they will be launching their album pretty soon so watch out for that as well. Here’s a little something I did in support of Michael because I believe that this kid is going places. If you want to be a part of this project click on the image below to take you to Michael’s webpage. Support the Filipino Artist!

I didn’t notice the hour, but I think it’s way past my bedtime, folks. Sleep is still the best all natural acne treatment for me. I’ll catch you all later coz I don’t want my face to be zit filled in the next few days. LOL

Get paid to simply blog – Truth or Scam

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

After almost a year of earning by blogging, the verdict is – it is absolutely TRUE. Yes peeps, it is true. I was one of those skeptic and wary bloggers who couldn’t believe that you could really earn from blogging until I finally caught the blogging fever from one of the forums I belong to.  It opened my eyes to the endless possibilities you can find online. It sounds so simple a lot of people find it unbelievable. There are a lot of resources out there to help you get started and for those who have been doing this for quite a while this information is actually quite basic but for those who are starting out I hope this proves helpful.

How does it work?

Well, first of all it starts with a blog. Your blog. You see, one cannot underestimate the power of the internet and a lot of people have used its ability to reach the widest number of people in a matter of seconds. Think about how fast news circulates around the globe as soon  it breaks. Unheard of 20 years ago, right? Today, as soon as your favorite celebrity gets caught in an ugly situation or a certain product gets blacklisted because of its harmful effects on consumers, news spreads faster than you can get it printed in tomorrow’s daily. And who does the spreading around? It’s folks like us who blog about it and who have become part of this online community in the blogosphere.

Advertisers recognize the power of this tool and see it as an opportunity to get the word out there about their products. Enter, the blogger. What used to be a simple online journal for a lot of people has turned into an additional or for some, an alternative source of income. Some do it leisurely while others have eventually turned pro and lease out “real estate” space on their websites. Nifty eh?

Where do I start?

So the next question you probably have is how do I do it? Where do I start? I have encouraged a lot of my friends to try this thing out and like myself, not knowing what to do or wondering whether I’m doing it the right way or the most important question I think they have on their mind is – Is this a scam? Hopefully after you read this post you’ll be a little more armed with information.

The first thing you really need is a blog and of course blog content. I started blogging online because I find it convenient to access my thoughts wherever I am and whenever I want. Convenience, that’s what it meant to me. I try to aim for useful quality content as opposed to just chatter in my posts as much as I can. Well, if not always, most of the time I do try. Take note, some paid blogging sites have specific requirements re how long you should have been blogging before they approve your blog. Most of them require your blog to be at least between 3 to 6 mos. old. Just so you’d know okay?

Next thing you need to look for is a tested and credible site that offers pay for blog posts. I have enrolled in more than a few and most of them I have found through feedback from other bloggers as well. Some of them have proved to be scammers but the ones I am part of right now I’m quite happy with. One of the more recent sites that I have found is Payingpost.com. I’m fairly new to this site and I still have to get my feet wet with them but so far it looks promising. They have a nice fresh look and the interfaces look simple enough to navigate around. They offer a lot of paid blogging opportunities that you can choose from. You might want to check them out.

The Bottomline

One thing that I have always said to my family and friends is that, if you are already spending  time on the internet surfing, chatting, googling around or just watching videos, why not make a little money on the side as well. You might as well earn back what you pay your internet service provider , right?

If you find this post useful and helpful and you would like to learn more in future posts, leave a comment and what you would like to know and I’ll try my best to post something worth reading.

Ciao for now!

Christmas Shopping Blues

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

I got the chance to watch another ballet show at the CCP last weekend. A friend of mine invited me to accompany her right after a mall show she did and boy, the traffic on the way there was awful. Everyone seems to be out Christmas shopping and what would normally take an hour to CCP took 30 minutes or so longer. It was still horrible on the way home even though it was already almost 11:00 pm. Too many people were out shooooooopping. Aren’t you glad there is online shopping? No traffic and no long checkout lines.

If you haven’t finished your Christmas list yet then why not check out some Holiday Glass Frames from Zenni Optical, The popular online eyeglasses shop.  They have a wide array of holiday frames available. I kinda like this one – of course it’s pink. What’s not to like? LOL

And yup, they still have those $ 8 Complete Rx Eyeglasses you can give as gifts to as many  friends and loved ones you want because they are so affordable. They make great stocking stuffers, don’t you think? What’s more, you don’t have to brave the traffic and the long lines anymore. You can do it right in your own home, even in your jammies. Just make sure you get each of their prescriptions right  and don’t mix them up or else they might end up seeing double. Happy shopping everyone!

Bring it ON-line!

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Hubby is considering a business concept that’s been on his mind for quite a while. We’ve discussed it quite a bit and one of the things that we think we need to do if it materializes is to start smart with how we build and online store is the way to go. For that we need a reliable e-commerce software that will adapt to the business as it grows. Of course, it has to be affordable, SEO optimized and with excellent customer support. I’ve been looking at a few providers of shopping cart software like Ashopcommerce.com and so far it looks promising. I think hubby and I can discuss it in more detail when we brainstorm again.  If  that’s where you want to go too, you can check it out as well.

Dial up or broadband?

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Well, for me it’s not your usual broadband because we have cable internet! We started out with the dial-up but of course, that was sooooo slow. Later on, we subscribed to this not-so-Smart wifi package but ended up disconnected most of the time. Then our cable TV provider offered a cable internet package which is so far the best deal that we’ve ever had. I don’t know what fiber cable of sorts they use, but so far, going online has never been a problem for us. It’s fast and furious and customer service is great. This is one happy web surfer chick, I’ll say. :)
