… 5 … 4 … 3 … 2 … 1 … ZERO! LIGHTS OUT!
My husband, who is part of WWF-Philippines was the one responsible for coordinating the switching off of the street lights in Roxas Blvd., Manila. He brought my eldest son Kai along with him to the first observance of Earth Hour 2008 in the Philippines. It was amazing for them to see how 99% of the establishments along Roxas Blvd turned off their light in succession, sort of like a domino effect plunging the strip into symbolic darkness for one hour… definitely a hair-raising awesome sight to see!
A lot of corporations, establishments in Pasay, Manila, Makati and Paranaque and even media networks participated in the countdown to 8pm (pretty much like the New Year countdown). I know that there were others especially in the provinces who would have wanted to join but were unable to do so. Maybe, next year the whole nation will have the chance to participate if awareness campaigns start early. All of us can do our part to make that happen – spread the word, print it on your shirts, give away buttons, caps or advertising pens promoting Earth Hour 2009 or just simply blog about it.
